Sophomore guard Jacob Young led the Longhorns with a career-high 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting.
KANSAS CITY, MO. – Sophomore guard Jacob Young poured in a career-high 29 points, but Texas Men's Basketball fell to No. 14/13 Texas Tech 73-69 on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.
Young finished 11-of-17 from the field and knocked down a career-high six 3-pointers in seven attempts. Freshman guard Matt Coleman added 20 points, including a perfect 10-of-10 clip from the charity stripe to go along with four assists and three boards. Freshman forward Mohamed Bamba contributed 10 points and four rebounds in 14 minutes, while freshman forward Jericho Sims posted a team-high eight rebounds.
UT trailed by as many as 14 in the first half, but was able to fight back to within one late in the second half. Texas shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field and the Longhorn bench outscored the Red Raiders, 39-25.
Texas trailed early after the Red Raiders recorded the first nine points of the contest. Young finished a layup on the break at the 12:12 mark, but Texas Tech knocked down a 3-pointer on the opposite end as Texas faced an 11-point (17-6) deficit at the under-12 timeout. UT connected on 5-of-7 field goals and held Texas Tech to a 2:21 scoring drought to pull within 22-12 with 7:43 remaining in the first half.
Young hit a three from the corner to cut the deficit to single digits (22-15) at the 6:04 mark. The Red Raiders answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch their lead to 30-19 with 4:29 to play. Coleman converted at the charity stripe with nine seconds left and the Longhorns forced a Texas Tech turnover on the ensuing inbounds pass, leading to a Bamba 3-pointer before the buzzer as Texas headed to the break trailing, 35-28.
Coleman paced the Longhorns in the first half with 10 points, including a 4-of-4 mark from the free throw line. Young went 4-of-6 from the field for nine points, while Bamba added seven points and four rebounds in seven minutes. UT held a 16-8 advantage in points in the paint.
Young knocked down his third 3-pointer of the contest to bring the Longhorns within six (44-38) at the 16:00 mark in the second half. Texas Tech used a 3:31 scoring drought for Texas to build a 51-40 lead with 13:45 to play. The Longhorns responded with a 14-4 run over a 4:53 stretch, fueled by 12 points from Young to cut the deficit to one (55-54) at the 7:55 mark.
The Red Raiders held a 62-57 advantage with 3:32 remaining after a 4:23 period without a field goal for Texas. An Osetkowski putback brought the Longhorns within 70-65 with 49 seconds to play, but Texas Tech hit three free throws over the final 34 seconds to seal the win.
Texas will learn its postseason fate on Sunday, March 11. The NCAA Men's Basketball Selection Show will be televised live beginning at 5 p.m. Central on TBS.
