AUSTIN, Texas – No. 19 Texas (13-5, 1-1 Big 12) seized a competitive doubles point and rode the momentum through singles on its way to a convincing 4-0 victory over No. 11 Oklahoma State (20-5, 2-1 Big 12) Friday evening at Texas Tennis Center.
The Longhorns and Cowboys engaged in a spirited doubles session to decide the match's opening point. Texas sandwiched doubles victories around an OSU win at second doubles to pull out the point. Junior Harrison Scott and sophomore Christian Sisgaard sparked the Horns with their 6-1 win over OSU's Brady Draheim and Mathieu Scaglia at third doubles.
OSU picked up a 6-3 win at second doubles and held a 5-2 lead at first doubles that it ultimately surrendered. UT's seventh-ranked tandem of juniors Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles dug out of their 5-2 hole at first doubles and ran off five straight games to close out a 7-5 win over OSU's 64th-ranked duo of Artur Dubinsky and Leftherios Theodorou and secure the doubles point.
At first singles, UT All-America sophomore Yuya Ito took the opening set from OSU's 71st-ranked Dubinski in a tiebreaker, 7-5. Ito cruised to a 6-1 second-set win to give the Horns a 2-0 lead.
Texas' 77th-ranked Telles notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Cowboys' Mendoza at fourth singles to deliver the Longhorns a 3-0 cushion just moments before UT's Sigsgaard closed out the team win.
The 122th-ranked sophomore from Denmark executed a perfect backhand drop shot at the net to finish off his 6-4, 6-4 win over OSU's Tristan Meraut and finish off the Longhorns' 4-0 victory. The remaining matches were suspended.
Texas closes out the weekend with its Senior Day match against No. 14 Oklahoma on Sunday. UT will recognize senior John Mee just prior to the match. The contest will begin at 4 p.m. CT or 30 minutes upon the conclusion of the Texas women's match that begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday's men's and women's matches will air live on Longhorn Network.
