SARASOTA, Fla. – No. 4 Texas posted top-two finishes and advanced all three of its boats to the A-B semifinals Friday in the first of three days of competition at the 2018 NCAA Division I Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park.
All three Texas boats – the I Eight, II Eight and Four – remain in contention for national titles and have ensured themselves no worse than top-12 national finishes at the 22-team regatta. Friday's results keep the Longhorns on track to potentially match or even exceed its fourth-place team finish from a year ago.
Placement in the A-B semifinals gives the participating teams a chance to qualify for Sunday's grand final – or championship final – in each event. Teams qualify for the A-B semifinals by placing among the top-two in their day one morning heats or among the top-two in the Friday afternoon repèchage heats.
Texas' I Eight led the fourth and final heat from the outset and gradually built an open-water lead on the field. The Longhorns were victorious in 6 minutes, 22.332 seconds while Ohio State took second at 6:27.620.
Heat three of the II Eight featured Texas and Virginia going neck-and-neck for first place after pulling away from the remainder of the field. UVA held a narrow lead over the Longhorns throughout the 2,000 meters and was victorious in 6:31.282. Texas comfortably secured its A-B semifinals berth in the event with its second-place time of 6:31.677. Princeton took third in the heat at 6:39.082.
Texas took on another highly-decorated field in the fourth and final heat of the fours. The Horns faced the likes of Virginia, who perennially puts together one of the strongest fours in the sport. Texas held a slight advantage throughout the race, and it held off the Cavaliers for the win at 7:13.275. UVA took second at 7:14.402 as both advanced to the A-B semifinals.
Saturday's race schedule will be available pending completion of the afternoon repèchage heats.
