Goals from Katie Glenn, Haley Berg and Cyera Hintzen led the Longhorns past the Islanders
AUSTIN, Texas – A first-half goal from senior midfielder Katie Glenn and second-half scores by sophomore midfielder/forward Haley Berg and junior forward Cyera Hintzen powered the Longhorns to a dominant, 3-0 exhibition win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Burnt Orange & White, who played 28-of-30 available roster players in the contest, out-shot the Islanders by a commanding 25-2 total and didn't allow a single TXAM-CC shot until the 52nd minute of action.
Berg led the offense on the night with a goal and two assists, while both Hintzen and Glenn registered three points via a score and a helper. Freshman midfielder Emma Regan was also credited with her first Texas assist off a cross on Berg's 51st-minute tally.
Texas took control right from the start of the match-up as Hintzen fired high and freshman midfielder Julia Grosso had a shot blocked over the opening four minutes.
It wasn't long until the woodwork made its presence well known to deny the Horns. First, senior midfielder Kayra Dollas fired an 18-yard shot off a corner kick that rattled off the crossbar before heading over. Next, Hintzen was denied by a 15-yard clang off the right post at 8:28, before Dollas again hit the bar on a quick-chipped effort from a few yards out on the right side at 17:10.
Finally, UT struck pay dirt in the 21st minute to grab a 1-0 lead. Berg battled a defender outside the top of the 18 to tap a ball ahead to Hintzen. The Garland, Texas, native had plenty of time to deliver a perfect through ball up the middle to Glenn in space, and the Round Rock, Texas, product finished easily from close range.
The Longhorns continued the pressure unabated over the remainder of the opening 45 minutes, taking a 1-0 advantage, and an 11-0 shot discrepancy, into the halftime break.
Out of the locker room, it took just 5:33 to double the Texas advantage. Glenn corralled a ball near the right end line, and made a pass to an onrushing Regan. The Burnaby, British Columbia, native quickly crossed a ball into the middle of the six where Berg fought off her marker to somehow finish from five yards out.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi registered its only two shots of the contest during the 52nd and 53rd-minutes as efforts from forward Emily Keoughan and defender Kaitlyn Joy traveled high and wide of frame, respectively.
The UT advantage expanded at 63:37 as Hintzen and Berg worked a perfect give-and-go inside the 18-yard box before Hintzen finished from 10 yards out to finalize Texas' 3-0 score line.
