THE OPENING KICKOFF
• The University of Texas begins its 126th season of football on Saturday when the Longhorns take on Maryland at FedExField in Landover, Md.
• Texas enters the 2018 campaign with 898 all-time wins, tied for second-most in college football history. UT holds an all-time record of 898-366-33 (.705).
• The Longhorns are 103-19-3 (.836) all-time in season openers. UT last began a season on the road in 2015 when they traveled to play at Notre Dame. In fact, 2018 marks just the third time in the last 23 years that Texas has opened a season on the road. Over the last 50 years, UT has begun on the road just 17 times, posting a 9-8 record in those games.
• UT finished the 2017 season with a record of 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the Big 12 Conference. The Longhorns defeated Missouri 33-16 in the Texas Bowl to cap off the season.
• Five of Texas' six losses came by 10 points or fewer, while four of them were by seven points or fewer. Both of those marks were the most among Power Five Conference schools last season. Two of their losses came by just three points in overtime.
• Maryland enters coming off a 2017 season that saw them go 4-8 overall and 2-7 in the Big Ten Conference.
• The Longhorns play another challenging slate in 2018, squaring off against 11 of their 12 opponents from a season ago. The only new opponent will be Tulsa, who the Longhorns have never played prior to 2018.
• Eight of UT's 2018 opponents played in a bowl game in 2017.
• Of the 64 Power Five Conference schools, just 12 (18.8%) play two Power Five opponents in the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Longhorns, who travel to Maryland and host USC, are one of those 12 schools.
• Furthermore, Texas is one of just seven schools nationally (California, Northwestern, Ohio State, USC, Purdue and West Virginia) to play a schedule with 11 Power Five opponents on it.
• The Longhorns are the only program in college football to play 11 Power Five Conference opponents in each regular season from 2015-18.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
• Texas leads the all-time series with Maryland, having won three of four games.
• The Terrapins defeated the Longhorns 51-41 in Austin to open the 2017 season.
• Prior to that, Texas had won all three matchups by a combined score of 102-0.
A TEXAS WIN WOULD...
• Be Texas' 899th victory all-time, putting them one win away from becoming the second program in College Football history to reach the 900-win plateau.
• Mark Tom Herman's 30th victory as a head coach.
• Improve UT's ledger in season openers to 104-19-3.
• Give the Longhorns their 17th season-opening win in the last 19 years.
HEAD COACH TOM HERMAN
• Tom Herman begins his second season as the head coach at Texas and his fourth season overall as a head coach.
• He owns a career record of 29-10 (.744) and has led his programs to bowl games in all three seasons thus far.
• Including the 2018 season, Herman has spent 15 of his 21 seasons as a coach in the state of Texas on the collegiate level.
• Herman graduated from Cal Lutheran and received his master's degree in education from The University of Texas.
• He owns a career mark of 7-4 against Top 25 opponents, 3-3 against Top 10 foes and 2-1 versus teams in the Top 5.
SCHOLARSHIP ALERT (VIDEO)
• During the last week of preseason camp, head coach Tom Herman rewarded three Longhorn walk-ons with scholarships.
• Jarmarquis (Jah-MARCUS) Durst earned a scholarship entering his third season in the program. A native of Conroe, Texas, Durst began his career at Tarleton State before coming to Texas in 2016 as a walk-on.
• Philipp Moeller earned a scholarship entering his fourth-year in the program. A wide receiver, Moeller joined the program in the spring of 2015 and was UT's male recipient of the Reuben McDaniel Award last year, bestowed upon a non-scholarship athlete each year.
• Austin Allsup is a native of Lorena, Texas and enters his third season in the program. He has played in three games.
NFL STADIUMS
• Saturday's game against Maryland is set to be played at FedExField, home of the NFL's Washington Redskins.
• The game will mark the Longhorns' second straight game played at an NFL stadium, as they finished last season with a win in the Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium, home of the Houston Texans.
• Texas also played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum against USC last season, currently serving as the temporary home of the LA Rams.
• Prior to last season, UT hadn't played in an NFL Stadium since playing Arkansas in the 2014 Texas Bowl.
CAPTAINS
The Longhorns announced their 2018 captains on Saturday, August 25. The five captains are:
Andrew Beck (Tampa, Fla., fifth-year TE)
Breckyn Hager (Austin, Texas, fourth-year DL)
Chris Nelson (Lakeland, Fla., fifth-year DL)
Elijah Rodriguez (Houston, Texas, fifth-year OL)
Anthony Wheeler (Dallas, Texas, fourth-year LB)
Hager, along with his father Britt (1988), becomes just the third father-son duo in school history to be named a Texas team captain. Ernie (1932) and Ted Koy (1969) were the first, followed by Robin (1980) and Lyle Sendlein (2006).
