The University of Texas opens its 2018 Fall Men's Tennis schedule spanning the nation from New Jersey to Louisiana to California as seven student-athletes compete in four events. The Longhorns have an experienced and talented roster that returns eight players, all of whom are juniors and seniors, from the 2017-18 team that won the Big 12 Championship and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, along with adding a pair of freshmen.
Juniors Yuya Ito and Christian Sigsgaard head to the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif. that will run from Thursday, Sept. 20 to Sunday, Sept. 23. The other three events will start Friday and also last until Sunday. Seniors Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles will take part in the Cajun Classic in Lafayette, La., freshman Chih Chi Huang will be in Princeton, N.J. for the Ivy Plus Invitational, while seniors Colin Markes and Harrison Scott head to San Francisco for the Battle in the Bay.
Texas is the only team in the nation to feature five players in the Top 70 of the preseason ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) rankings. Ito led the way at No. 29, while Scott (No. 47), Sigsgaard (No. 54), Banzer (No. 61) and Telles (No. 62) completed the group in singles. In doubles, the pairing of Scott and Sigsgaard checked in at No. 11.
Ito and Sigsgaard earned first-team All-Big 12 honors last year in singles, while Sigsgaard teamed with Scott to garner first-team honors in doubles, and Scott and Ortiz were on the second team in singles. Head coach Michael Center was selected as the 2018 Big 12 Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.
