The Longhorns swept the Rebels, 7-0, without dropping a set on Wednesday in Orlando.
Orlando, Fla. – No. 8 Texas Men's Tennis topped Ole Miss in the first dual match of the 2019 season, 7-0, Wednesday at the USTA National Campus Collegiate Center in Orlando, Fla. The Longhorns took all six singles points plus the doubles point without dropping a set.
Texas opened the day by claiming the doubles point following a 6-1 win by No. 33 senior Harrison Scott and junior Christian Sigsgaard over Fabian Fallert and Tim Sandkaulen, and a 6-2 win by seniors Colin Markes and Leonardo Telles over Filip Kraljevic and Cotter Wilson. Junior Yuya Ito and freshman Chih Chi Huang's match went unfinished leading 5-3 over Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk.
In singles, No. 4 Sigsgaard took the first point, rallying in the first set to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sandkaulen. No. 103 Huang then took a 6-2, 6-3 win over Wilson. No. 18 Ito clinched the team win with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Kraljevic. All three of the remaining matches included tiebreaker wins in one of the sets. Scott held off Hain, 6-3, 7-6 (4), while Markes won a first-set tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Junk, and Telles finished the day with a 6-1, 7-6 (6) win over Fallert.
"This week you are trying to assess things," head coach Michael Center said. "I thought we did a really good job in Miami (in an individual tournament this past weekend). We prepared and improved as we went along. We competed with (Ole Miss) down there but had six completely different match-ups. It was a totally different match today. When we really needed to make plays, we did a good job of that. Our energy level was good but it was a great start. It was a really good team effort and we had a great week. We got to play a lot of tennis. It was a great start, and we'll come home excited to play SMU."
Using PlaySight SmartCourt technology, the PlayFair Challenge System was unveiled for the first time at the USTA National Campus. Each student-athlete received three challenges per set, and in the end a total of eight challenges were called with just one point being overturned.
"We wanted to see the Campus, it was exciting to be here," Center said. "Our goal is to be back here for the NCAA Championships in May. It was a great experience, and we really enjoyed it. It was a clean match. Mississippi's got a really nice team, it was a great experience for us, and I'm sure it was for them. The PlayFair system is the way to go. I think that's the future."
Along with it being the debut of PlayFair, it also was the first dual-match of 2019 at the Campus. Approximately 300 dual-matches are anticipated to be held at the facility this year, highlighted by the NCAA Division I Championships in May.
Up next, Texas returns to Austin for its home opener against SMU on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
