No. 14 Football wins Allstate Sugar Bowl, 28-21 over No. 6 Georgia

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Sam Ehlinger found the end zone three times on the ground and went 19-of-27 through the air to lead No. 14 Texas (10-4, 7-2) to a 28-21 victory over No. 6 Georgia (11-3, 7-1) on Tuesday night in the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Longhorns outgained UGA in rushing yards 178-72 and turned the Bulldogs over twice. Ehlinger earned Most Valuable Player honors for his performance, as his three rushing touchdowns tied the Sugar Bowl record for a quarterback. Ehlinger finished with 16 rushing touchdowns on the season, a new school record for a Longhorn quarterback.
KEY STATISTICS
• Texas opened up the game with a 75-yard touchdown drive, capped off by a two-yard rush from Sam Ehlinger. Ehlinger was 5-of-5 in the air for 61 yards on Texas' opening possession.
• The Bulldogs would turn the ball over on their opening drive after the Georgia punter fell to his knee attempting to catch the snap, resulting in a 37-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker and a 10-0 Longhorn lead.
• After the teams traded punts, the Longhorns capitalized on another Bulldog turnover following a Georgia fumble at the UGA nine. Ehlinger would punch it in from nine yards out for Texas' second touchdown of evening.
• The Bulldogs answered with a 12 play, 75-yard touchdown drive to cut the Texas lead to 17-7 with 9:03 left to play in the second quarter.
• After driving 63 yards to the Georgia 13-yard line, the Longhorn offense couldn't convert on third and long as Dicker knocked through a 30-yard field goal to put Texas up 13 late in the first half.
• Anthony Wheeler dropped Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm for a nine-yard loss, forcing the Bulldogs out of field goal range on their final possession of the half with Texas heading to the locker room on top 20-7.
• P.J. Locke picked off a Jake Fromm pass on the first possession of the second half to give Texas the ball on their own 39-yard line, but the Longhorns couldn't pick up a first down and were forced to punt.
• The Longhorn defense stepped up to force two-straight Georgia punts as UT drove 70 yards in 4:25, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown rush from Ehlinger on fourth down. Collin Johnson hauled in the pass on the two-point conversion as Texas built a 28-7 lead with 11:49 left in the game.
• Georgia answered with a quick 6 play, 67-yard touchdown drive to pull within two scores before the teams once again exchanged punts.
• The Bulldogs used a missed 45-yard field goal attempt by the Longhorns to spur another touchdown drive with just 14 seconds remaining in the game.
• Texas secured the onside kick and ran out the clock as UGA was left without any timeouts remaining, giving the Longhorns a 28-21 victory.
UP NEXT
Tonight's game concluded the 2018 campaign, one that saw the Longhorns go 10-4, their most wins since the 2009 season. UT opens the 2019 season on Aug. 31 when they host Louisiana Tech at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.
