The Longhorns swept the Huskies, 4-0, to move to 3-0 on the season and advance to Saturday’s championship match.
Austin, Texas – The No. 8 Texas Men's Tennis team took its ITA Kickoff Weekend opener against Washington with a 4-0 sweep at the Texas Tennis Center on Friday. With the win, the Longhorns moved to 3-0 this season and advanced to Saturday's championship match against Miami (Fla.), which defeated Utah State, 4-2.
Texas opened the match by earning the doubles point with a pair of 6-3 wins as junior Yuya Ito and freshman Chih Chi Huang defeated Kawika Lam and Kasper Smith, while seniors Colin Markes and Leonardo Telles topped Ewen Lumsden and Enzo Sommer. The third doubles match was left unfinished at 6-5 with Jack Davis and Piers Foley leading No. 33 senior Harrison Scott and junior Christian Sigsgaard.
No. 4 Sigsgaard got the Longhorns off to a fast start in singles winning his first 10 games en route to a 6-0, 6-1 over Sommer in first singles. Scott followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lumsden in fourth singles. After splitting the first four games, Scott pulled away, winning the last four games of the first set and the first three of the second before also taking the last four. No. 18 Ito and No. 103 Huang took their matches to a photo finish with Ito picking up the clinching point first with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Foley in second singles. The team win ended with Huang holding a match point against Ernesto Turegano, 6-2, 5-3. Telles and senior Rodrigo Banzer each won a set in their matches that went unfinished.
The Longhorns will now play Miami in the championship match on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Texas Tennis Center. The winner of that match will then advance to the ITA National Indoor Championship in Chicago from Feb. 15-18.
This will mark the second time this season the Longhorns and Hurricanes have faced each other, however the previous meeting was individual play and not a dual match. Texas won six matches to Miami's three in singles, while sweeping four doubles matches on Jan. 12 and 13 in Miami.
