College Station, Texas – No. 1 Texas Men's Tennis advanced to the SEC Championship semifinals with a 4-2 win over 9 seed No. 19 Florida on Friday in College Station. It was the second time the Longhorns had beaten the Gators in the span of a week after a 4-1 win to close the regular season last Friday in Austin. Texas will next face 5 seed No. 10 Texas A&M on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT in a start time that was adjusted due to the potential for inclement weather.
Although Texas was first off the doubles court with a win at No. 2, Florida claimed the point with wins at Nos. 3 and 1. However, the Longhorns responded with singles victories by freshman No. 93 Abel Forger at No. 5, and sophomore Oliver Ojakaar at No. 4 to take a 2-1 lead. The Gators evened it again with a win at No. 6, but Texas answered with wins by freshman No. 34 Kalin Ivanovski at No. 2, and senior No. 3 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1 for the clinch.
After doubles, Forger and Ojakaar both made quick work of their matches with Forger downing No. 63 Henry Jefferson, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5, followed by Ojakaar with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over No. 62 Pablo Perez Ramos at No. 4. Freshman Lucas Marionneau then fell to Kevin Edengren, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6 for the 2-2 overall tie.
Ivanovski also produced a decisive result with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Lorenzo Claverie at No. 2, and then Gorzny was just as effective in his second set as he completed a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory over No. 95 Adhithya Ganesan at No. 1 to clinch. That left one match unfinished where sophomore No. 46 Sebastian Eriksson was trailing No. 102 Jeremy Jim, 4-6, 5-5, at No. 3 when play stopped.
Earlier in doubles, all three matches were decided by a 6-4 score, and it was the No. 24 duo of Gorzny and Marionneau who struck first with a win over Ganesan and Perez Ramos at No. 2. However, the No. 40 pair of Eriksson and Ojakaar then were downed by Edengren and Andreas Timini at No. 3, before Ivanovski and Forger came up short against the No. 9 team of Jefferson and Tanapatt Nirundorn at No. 1.
