No. 8 Men’s Tennis advances to ITA National Indoor Championship

The Longhorns swept Miami (Fla.), 4-0, in the championship match of the Austin ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Austin, Texas – The No. 8 Texas Men's Tennis team punched its ticket to the ITA National Indoor Championship with a 4-0 sweep over Miami (Fla.) in the championship match of Austin ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday. The ITA Indoors will take place in Chicago from Feb. 15-18.
The match started with early drama in doubles as junior Yuya Ito and freshman Chih Chi Huang cliched the point for Texas in a tiebreaker over Stephen Madonia and Dane Dunlap in third doubles, 7-6 (5). The Longhorn pair held a 4-2 lead before the Hurricanes came storming back with three straight game wins and a 5-4 lead. The teams then alternated games for a 6-6 tie with Ito and Huang emerging 7-5 from the tiebreaker.
Prior to that, No. 33 junior Harrison Scott and senior Christian Sigsgaard had started first doubles in strong fashion for Texas with a 6-0 win over Franco Aubone and Kaya Gore. Miami responded with a 6-1 win for Bojan Jankulovski and Adria Soriano Barrera over seniors Colin Markes and Leonardo Telles.
In singles play, the Longhorns picked up two wins against ranked opponents. No. 18 Ito got off to a quick start in second singles, defeating No. 35 Jankulovski (6-1, 6-1), while No. 4 Sigsgaard avenged a previous loss to No. 21 Soriano Barrera from two weeks ago in Miami and scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory in first singles. No. 103 Huang then put the match away with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Franco Aubone in fifth singles to push the Longhorns' dual match record to 4-0 for the season.
Texas returns to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against UT-San Antonio at 2 p.m. and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6 p.m. at the Texas Tennis Center.
