No. 6 Women’s Tennis defeats Baylor, 4-0

Longhorns sweep ITA Kick-off Weekend championship match and advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 8-11 in Seattle.
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 6 University of Texas women's tennis team swept Baylor 4-0 in the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center. With the victory, the Longhorns (2-0) advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, scheduled for Feb. 8-11 in Seattle.
Texas took a 1-0 lead by earning a hard-fought doubles point. Junior Petra Granic and freshman Tijana Spasojevic posted a 6-4 win against Jessica Hinojosa and Kris Sorokolet at the No. 1 spot. With the match tied at 4-4, Granic and Spasojevic broke Baylor and then held serve to close out the victory.
Juniors Anna Turati and Bianca Turati clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 against Angie Shakhraichuk and Paula Baranano. Trailing 4-3, Baylor's duo broke serve to tie the game at 4-4. The Turati twins responded with a break of their own and then held serve to finish out the match.
Sophomore No. 77 Fernanda Labraña got off the singles courts first to extend UT's lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Baranano at the fifth spot. Seconds later, No. 49 Anna Turati closed out her match at two singles by a score of 6-1, 6-1 against Hinojosa.
No. 53 Granic punched UT's ticket to Seattle and ITA National Team Indoors with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at three singles against Sorokolet. Granic trailed by a 4-2 count in the opening set before winning four consecutive games. She then jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set and cruised to her straight-set win.
Prior to competing in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, the Longhorns will travel to compete against a pair of Big Ten Conference opponents this coming weekend. Texas will play at Ohio State on Friday, Feb. 1 (5 p.m. CT) before facing No. 9 Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 3 (11 a.m. CT).
