AUSTIN, Texas— Junior guard/forward Joyner Holmes scored a team high 16 points, but the No. 12 Texas Women's Basketball team (17-4, 7-2 Big 12) was defeated by West Virginia (15-5, 6-3 Big 12), 64-58, on Monday night at the Frank Erwin Center. Holmes converted on 6-of-15 from the floor while also chipping in six rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes.
Senior forward Jatarie White scored 15 points, on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, and also pulled down eight rebounds, while junior guard Sug Sutton recorded 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Holmes and White carried the offensive load for the Longhorns, combining to score all nine of Texas' points to start the game, but UT would trail 10-9 at the 3:38 mark of the first quarter after a 6-0 run from West Virginia's Tynice Martin. West Virginia outscored the Longhorns 19-4 over the final 5:55 of the quarter to take a 10-point lead (23-13).
A 6-0 spurt from the Longhorns cut the deficit to six (33-27) with 1:15 left in half. WVU's Kari Niblack completed a traditional three-point play with 5.5 seconds left that pushed West Virginia's cushion to 11 (38-27) at the midway point.
Sutton knocked down a put back floater as time expired to trim West Virginia's lead to eight (51-43) at the end of the third quarter. After trailing by as many as 14 points, Texas scored the first six points to open the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to just two (51-49) with 6:43 remaining.
Another WVU three-pointer pushed the lead back to seven (60-53), but Sutton countered with a pull up jumper and a pair of free throws to draw within five (61-56) with 1:38 left. Trailing 62-58 with 1:20 left, the Longhorns had opportunities to strike back. However, a missed layup by Holmes and two costly turnovers in the last 33 seconds of the game allowed West Virginia to leave the Erwin Center with a six-point victory.
Martin scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Mountaineers.
