Junior Sug Sutton and sophomore Destiny Littleton combine for 35 points.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The duo of Sug Sutton (19 points) and Destiny Littleton (16 points) combined for 35 points to lead No. 13/12 Texas to a hard-fought 70-58 win at West Virginia on Sunday at WVU Coliseum.
Texas (12-2, 2-0 Big 12), which trailed 24-22 at halftime, out-scored West Virginia 48-34 in the second half.
West Virginia (9-4, 0-2 Big 12) opened the first quarter scoring an unanswered three-pointer and lay-up. The combined five points would stand to be the largest lead of the game by both teams well past halftime. Play in the first half was back-and-forth, with no clear play dominator presenting in either team. The Longhorns went into the break trailing by just a pair of points, with Sutton leading Texas' scoring at 11. Texas shot just under 28 percent in the first half.
The Mountaineers would surrender the lead in the third quarter, as Texas turned the story around and put up 26 points to WVU's 16. Littleton went off from beyond the arc, scoring three three-point baskets within four and a half minutes. In the final quarter, Littleton hit a new career high in three-point baskets made with four. The sophomore scored 14 points in the second half alone. Junior Joyner Holmes joined in the second-half scoring drive, tallying 11 herself. Less than six minutes left in the fourth period, the Longhorns clinched the largest lead of the game at 18 points, when freshman Audrey Warren picked up two in the paint at 5:51 to go. However, WVU went on a 12-1 run over 4:07, coming within just six points of the lead. A trio of fouls by WVU on Holmes, Littleton, and Sutton granted Texas six free throw attempts. Four of the six attempts were made, and an offensive rebound and lay-up on the last attempt brought the lead back to 12 for the Horns.
