The Football Writers Association of America honored the Longhorns’ true freshman safety on Monday.
SAN JOSE, California - Texas Football's true freshman safety Caden Sterns was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) on Monday morning. In addition to Monday's recognition, Sterns was named a freshman All-American by USA TODAY, The Athletic and ESPN in 2018. He also earned the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year honors and was named first team All-Big 12 by both the league's coaches and the Associated Press.
Sterns, who hails from from Cibolo, Texas, had 62 tackles (46 solo) with three TFL, one sack, four interceptions and four pass breakups this season. His four interceptions were tied for the most ever by a Longhorn true freshman. He also has a blocked field goal against USC, which was returned for a touchdown. He started the first 13 games of the season, the first Longhorn true freshman defensive back to do so since Blake Gideon in 2008.
Sterns and the Longhorns beat No. 6 Georgia, 28-21, in the Allstate Sugar Bowl last week to cap a 10-4 season. The 10 wins for the Horns were the program's most since winning 13 games in 2009. UT finished with five wins over ranked teams, one of only four teams nationally to do so, joining Alabama, LSU and Ohio State.
