Senior guard Kerwin Roach II had a game-high 21 points to pace four Longhorns in double-figure scoring.
AUSTIN, Texas — Senior guard Kerwin Roach II scored a game-high 21 points to lead The University of Texas Men's Basketball team (13-10, 5-5 Big 12) to an 84-72 victory against Baylor (15-7, 6-3 Big 12) on Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. Roach topped the 20-point mark for the third time this season and 10th time in his collegiate career.
Roach converted 7-of-9 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and 5-of-8 from the free throw line while adding 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 31 minutes. Sophomore guard Matt Coleman III registered 18 points, hitting 8-of-9 from the charity stripe, and tied a season high with 6 rebounds while adding 5 assists against just 2 turnovers in 38 minutes.
Freshman forward Jaxson Hayes notched 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. Freshman guard Courtney Ramey tallied 10 points and chipped in 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
Coleman connected on his second 3-point basket of the first half to give Texas a 12-point lead (26-14) at the 8:25 mark. The Longhorns ended the last 3:02 of the first half on an 8-1 run, highlighted by a four-point play by Roach, increasing the margin to 15 (45-30) at halftime.
An 11-2 run by Baylor in the opening minutes of the second half allowed the Bears to trim the lead to single digits (53-45) at the 15:24 mark. Sophomore guard Jase Febres responded by hitting back-to-back threes to push the advantage back to 14 points (59-45) with 13:48 left.
The lead did not dip below double digits in the final 11 minutes. Febres knocked down his third three-pointer of the second half to give Texas its largest lead of the night (72-54) at the 8:18 mark.
