Junior Joyner Holmes scores a team-high and career-high 22 points.
LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Junior forward Joyner Holmes tied her career-high with 22 points and No. 14 Texas turned in the eighth-best single-game field-goal percentage in program history as the Longhorns defeated Kansas 91-73 on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.
Texas (19-5, 9-3 Big 12 Conference) shot 63.5 percent [33-of-52] from the field in the game, which ties for the eighth-best single-game field-goal percentage mark in program history. That is the best single-game field-goal percentage mark for the Longhorns since Feb. 20, 2013.
Holmes led the Longhorns with 22 points. She also recorded six rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes of action. Freshman forward Charli Collier also had an impressive outing, scoring 14 points and tallying six rebounds and two steals. Collier is the second Texas player this season to go 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, as Destiny Littleton accomplished the feat vs. Northwestern State on Dec. 29, 2018.
The Longhorns took off early on a 15-0 run to begin the game, featuring scoring from Sutton, Williams, Littleton, and Holmes. The Jayhawks missed their first 12 shots before finally scoring a layup at 4:15 to end their drought. Freshman Audrey Warren returned to action, after missing the last three games due to a concussion. The quarter ended with Texas up by 13 points, 24-11. Sutton scored 10 points and Jatarie White scored nine during the first 10 minutes of game play.
The second quarter began with another Kansas drought, as Texas went on a 10-0 run with baskets from Holmes, Littleton, Williams and Olamide Aborowa. Kansas' Kylee Kopatich scored back-to-back layups, putting the score at 36-15 before Aborowa scored a jumper, initiating the media timeout. The senior forward contributed six points in the quarter, making an immediate impact off of the bench. Texas went on to lead by as many as 27 points at 3:24 before back-to-back Jayhawk three-point buckets forced a Texas timeout, the score reflecting 42-21. After the short rest, both teams faced scoring trouble from the field. However, both teams were able to knock down points from the charity stripe. The first half closed 43-26, with Texas on top.
Texas dropped three three-point field goals at the beginning of the second half, including one from junior Jada Underwood, her first of the season. Collier would go off in this half, scoring 10 points. Texas retained its lead during the period and ultimately ended with an 18-point margin over Kansas.
Texas will continue its road stint, heading to Stillwater, Okla., on Tuesday to take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest Plus and a radio broadcast will transmit on 105.3 FM in Austin or at TexasSports.com/Audio.
