STILLWATER, Okla. — No. 15 Texas Women's Basketball took down Oklahoma State on Tuesday evening at Gallagher-Iba Arena, 61-55. The win concludes the season sweep over the Cowgirls, with Texas topping OSU 60-51 at the Erwin Center on January 2.
The Longhorns (20-5, 10-3 Big 12 Conference) reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth consecutive season and for the 36th time in the program's 45-year history.
Texas was led in scoring by junior guard Sug Sutton, who came out with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Graduate student Danni Williams, junior Joyner Holmes and freshman Charli Collier each dropped 10 points and the trio combined for 18 rebounds. Senior forward Olamide Aborowa had a game-high eight rebounds.
Scoring got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but the shot of the quarter came from sophomore Destiny Littleton, who had a high-arching three-point bucket with 45 seconds remaining. The quarter ended 11-10, with the Cowgirls ahead by a single point.
In the second quarter, Oklahoma State's Braxtin Miller hit an early pair of threes, with one tying the game at 14-14 and the other putting the Cowgirls up by one, after a basket from Sutton. After this small surge, Texas went on a 6-0 mini run over 1:49, sending the Cowgirls into an almost three minute scoring drought and taking over the lead, the Cowgirls unable to recapture the edge for the remainder of the game. The half closed at 25-23, the Longhorns holding on to a slim two-point lead. Scoring in the second quarter featured baskets from six different Texas players, including Sutton, Olamide Aborowa, Jatarie White, Holmes, Collier and Littleton.
After the break, Williams quickly sank two three-point baskets in under three minutes, pushing the margin to eight points. After a succession of Texas free throws, the Cowgirls countered with a three-pointer and a jumper, coming within just three of the Longhorns' lead. The third quarter would end with Texas up just three, 42-39.
Scoring in the final quarter was largely back-and-forth, the margin constantly fluctuating between four and seven points. With a minute to go, Texas guarded the score at 56-51, however, Oklahoma State's Ja'Mee Asberry converted a defensive rebound into a fast break lay-up, the Cowgirls trailing again by just three points. The final minute was dotted with trips to the charity stripe for the Longhorns. Despite the Cowgirls' fight and tenacity, the match ended 61-55 after Texas added five points from the line.
Up next, Texas returns home to play Kansas State on Sunday, Feb. 17, presented by St. David's Healthcare. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. CT. It's the annual Shoot For A Cure game and free "Texas Fighter" t-shirts will be available to fans while supplies last. The game will be televised on FSN and a radio broadcast will be available locally at 105.3 FM in Austin or nationally at TexasSports.com/Audio.
