AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday night in spring action at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Texas soccer got goals from four different players, including the second consecutive hat trick from sophomore midfielder Haley Berg and two more scores from junior Cyera Hintzen, in rolling past Monterrey Tech, 7-0.
UT freshman midfielders Julia Grosso and Lauryn Oliver (a mid-term enrollee) also added goals for the Longhorns offensive attack, while junior Nicole Curry, sophomore Savannah Madden and sophomore Bailey Dobbs all combined on a shutout between the pipes.
For the match, the Longhorns out-shot Monterrey Tech by a total of 27-3, including 16-1 over the final 45 minutes.
Berg now owns a remarkable eight combined goals over just four spring contests, while Hintzen boasts three. Oliver, Grosso and freshman forward MacKenzie McFarland have all scored once this spring season.
Texas wasted little time making headway offensively as Berg missed just outside the right post by inches just two minutes in.
The Longhorns continued to pressure over the next few minutes as sophomore forward Taylor Currie nearly got in alone during the seventh minute only for the Monterrey Tech keeper to race off her line and smother a ball before a shot could be taken.
Berg came very close to a breakthrough during the 13th minute as her drive from nine yards out in the middle was tipped up and over the bar by Monterrey Tech keeper Natalia Cano.
The Borreguitas were close to building up a great chance near the top of the 18 during the 16th minute only for Texas defenders Cameron Brooks and Emma Regan to combine and snuff out the opportunity.
It was Hintzen that granted the Burnt Orange & White the lead at the 17:12 mark as the All-American handled a cross from Berg about eight yards out and slammed home her second goal of the spring to make it 1-0.
Monterrey Tech managed its first shot during the 22nd minute as an attempt was popped up from 30 yards out and never got close to frame.
Less than a minute later, Berg struck for the Longhorns off a Regan assist to double UT's advantage to 2-0.
The lead became 3-0 at the 31:35 mark as a ball crossed from the left wing found Oliver on the right side of the 18. She quickly located the lower left corner of the twine to score from 13 yards out.
Over the remainder of the first half, freshman midfielder Kailey Smith and junior forward Kyra Falcone each managed attempts as the Longhorns registered an 11-2 shot advantage at the break.
Out of the locker room, Texas' offense broke the match wide open by scoring three times over a stretch of just 1:24 during the 55th and 56th minutes.
First, Berg found Hintzen with a pass right out front at 54:26 as the Garland, Texas, native finished her second goal of the night for a 4-0 advantage.
Just 27 seconds later it was Grosso tickling the twine as the Team Canada international broke free up the middle and powered home a drive from 11 yards out.
The lead expanded further to 6-0 at the 55:50 mark as Berg managed to knock in her second of the night.
With Texas' offense continuing to buzz around its offensive third, the Horns continued to create chances on shots from senior midfielder Katie Glenn, Falcone, McFarland, Regan, Currie and senior forward Alexa Adams.
The only real drama left in the match was to see whether Berg or Hintzen would complete a hat trick, and the former did just that during the 86th minute. The Celina, Texas, product eluded a defender on the right wing, moved in on the Monterrey Tech keeper and fired twice with both shots being saved right back to Berg. She didn't miss a third time as her shot to the left of the net minder finalized the count at 7-0.
