The Texas First Eight, First Four, and Third Eight placed first overall for the Longhorns
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 4 University of Texas rowing team secured the 2019 Longhorn Invite title, with three A final wins.
"Our team had a good day, and this was certainly a step in the right direction as our first eight had two really solid races," said head coach Dave O'Neill. "We went through quite a few lineups this week, and I'm very pleased where we ended up. We have a good mix of experience and youthful energy in that group, and they're becoming a better crew everyday."
Despite a change in the original racing schedule due to concerns of dangerous winds on Saturday morning, all racing was completed.
"Big thanks to the visiting teams and coaches for their cooperation when the weather was working against us. The priority is always to have good, fair racing, and I think we accomplished that," O'Neill said. "All the crews raced really well, and the depth of the program is starting to show. There are plenty of areas where we can improve, but overall this was a very good day."
The First Eight and the First Four both took first place in their races, while the Second Eight placed second, just behind Virginia.
The Second Four nudged to the line behind Virginia by less than two seconds, but prevailed over Oregon State by 10 seconds and Indiana by almost 11 seconds.
The Third, White and Orange Eights finished first, second, and third, respectively, over Oregon State.
Up next, Texas will travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on No. 6 Ohio State. The Buckeyes have won nine Big 10 Conference championships and six consecutively. Texas edged Ohio State at the 2018 NCAA Championships, taking third place overall with 115 points to sixth place Ohio State's 101.
