Junior Yuya Ito defeated John McNally of Ohio State, while junior Christian Sigsgaard and senior Harrison Scott fell in the first round.
Orlando, Fla. – Men's Tennis junior No. 12 (9-16 seed) Yuya Ito advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship with a 6-3, 7-5 win over John McNally of Ohio State on Monday in Orlando.
After clinching Texas' first team National Championship in men's tennis and being named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, Ito made a quick turnaround to secure a victory in individual play.
Ito and then McNally held serve in the first two games of the match, but after that breaks became the theme of the first set. The next two games were both decided on breaks before Ito held to lead, 3-2, but the breaks returned for the next three games, including the first two on deuce points to leave Ito up, 5-3. He would finish it in the next game, holding on another deuce point to take the set.
Much like the first set, the second set began with two holds, first by McNally and then by Ito, and then by two breaks to even it, 2-2. The next four games would all stay on serve to keep the match even at 4-4 before the next two games were broken for 5-5. Ito then held and broke to take the match. He will next face Victor Pham on Tuesday at a time to be determined.
Earlier in the day, junior No. 7 (6 seed) Christian Sigsgaard and senior No. 55 Harrison Scott both fell in first-round matches. Sigsgaard was defeated by No. 31 Juan Aguilar of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-3, while Scott was downed by No. 19 (9-16) seed William Blumberg of North Carolina by the same score.
The Doubles Championship begins Tuesday when No. 5 (5-8 seed) Scott and Sigsgaard will take the court against No. 31 Simen Bratholm and Nick Brookes of Northwestern at a time to be determined.
