Jonathan Jones breaks 27-year-old school record in 400m, Teahna Daniels wins 100m and eight more Longhorns punch tickets to NCAA Championships June 5-8 in Austin.
AUSTIN, Texas – It was a record-setting Friday for Texas Track & Field at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Sacramento, Calif. as a long-standing school-record went down and eight more Longhorns punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships. That increases the total number of Longhorn qualifiers for the NCAA Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin (June 5-8) to 11 with one day of competition remaining. The NCAA West Preliminaries field features the top 48 qualifiers from the West Region of the country with the top 12 finishers advancing to the National Championship.
Jonathan Jones provided one of the night's top highlights as the freshman broke a 27-year old Longhorn school record in the 400 meters, clocking 45.02, finishing second overall and advancing the NCAA Championship. Jones broke Du'aine Ladejo's school mark of 45.25 that was set at the 1992 NCAA Championship.
Senior Teahna Daniels followed up with a spectacular effort of her own, matching the third-fastest 100m time in UT history with a 10.99 clocking, finishing first overall and advancing to the NCAA Championships. That time was just .05 seconds shy of Longhorn Legend Carlette Guidry's school-record of 10.94 set in 1991.
Three Longhorns qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 3000m Steeplechase, with Anna McDonald earning a bid on the women's side and Alex Rogers and John Rice advancing for the men. Anna McDonald finished 11th and eclipsed the Longhorn school record in the steeplechase with a time 9:58.07, breaking Meghan Lloyd's mark set at last year's NCAA West Prelims (10:11.73). Rogers finished third in the race and posted a time of 8:35.25, making him the fifth-best steeplechaser in UT history while Rice's took sixth place and his time of 8:38.29 established him as the Horns eight-best performer ever in the event.
Senior Trevor Danielson started the day by finishing fifth in the javelin to advance to the NCAA Championship while two Longhorn women moved on to the national meet in the 400m with senior Zoe Golden and Serenity Douglas earning top 12 finishes and NCAA bids.
With two long jumpers (Steffin McCarter and Sophia Falco) earning NCAA Championship bids on Thursday and Ashtin Zamzow previously qualified in the heptathlon, Texas now has 11 student-athletes advancing to the National Championship in Austin.
Several other Longhorns advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals with their performances on Friday. Kynnedy Flannel (23.06) and Daniels (23.16) both won their heats in the 200m to advance for the women in that event. Micaiah Harris scorched to a 20.10 to win his heat in the men's 200m to move on to Saturday's quarterfinals as well. The time would have been a school-record but the wind reading of 2.4 was over the allowable limit.
Longhorn two-sport standout and All-American John Burt clocked 13.84 in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals while Mariam Abdul-Rashid also advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals in the women's 100m hurdles.
Saturday will be the final day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminaries at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadiums as the quest for NCAA Championship bids continues.
