RB Keaontay Ingram recognized as preseason candidate for prestigious award.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas sophomore running back Keaontay Ingram was named a preseason candidate for the 2019 Doak Walker Award on Wednesday. The award, presented annually by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum, is given to the nation's top college running back.
He looks to join a prestigious trio of Longhorns who have won the Doak Walker Award, which began in 1990. Ricky Williams was a two-time winner, bringing home the trophy in 1997 and 1998, while Cedric Benson collected the hardware in 2004 and D'Onta Foreman won the honor in 2016.
Ingram, a native of Carthage, Texas, rushed 142 times for 708 yards and three touchdowns during his freshman season in 2018. He appeared in 13 games and started against both Oklahoma State and West Virginia. Last season, Ingram scored against Maryland to become the first Longhorn true freshman with a rushing touchdown in the season opener since 2005, when Jamaal Charles and Henry Melton both did so. He passed the century mark on the ground for the first time in his career during UT's 23-17 win over Baylor later in the year, as he carried the ball 19 times for 110 yards. Ingram also recorded 12 touches (nine rushes, three receptions) in Texas' win over No. 5 Georgia in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced on November 20. The committee will cast a second vote beginning December 2 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2019 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 12 on ESPN.
The award, which will name its 30th recipient in 2019, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
