Texas QB Sam Ehlinger was recognized as a preseason candidate for college football’s fourth-oldest individual accolade on Friday.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – University of Texas Football quarterback Sam Ehlinger was named to the watch list for the 2019 Walter Camp Player of the Year Award on Friday. The Walter Camp is the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade and has been awarded to a Longhorn on three occasions (Ricky Williams, 1998; Colt McCoy, 2008-09).
Ehlinger, an Austin, Texas native, played in and started all 14 games a season ago. He was named honorable mention All-Big 12 by the league's head coaches and a semifinalist for the 2018 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award after finishing the year with 3,292 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns and 16 more scores on the ground. His 16 rushing touchdowns are a UT record for quarterbacks and he is the first player in Texas history to pass for at least 25 touchdowns and rush for at least 15 in a season. Ehlinger's 41 touchdowns responsible for in 2018 are the second-most in school history, trailing only Colt McCoy's 45 touchdowns in 2008.
The Longhorn quarterback has already received a number of preseason honors so far in 2019, including being named to the 2019 Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award and Wuerffel Trophy watch lists over the past two weeks. Earlier this month, Ehlinger was named the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year in a poll of the league's media representatives, a first-team All-Big 12 Preseason selection by Phil Steele and a third-team preseason All-American by Athlon Sports.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year Award watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in mid-November. The 2019 recipient, which is voted on by the 130 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 12. The winner will receive his trophy at the Walter Camp Football Foundation's 53rd annual national awards banquet on Jan. 18, 2020, in New Haven, Conn.
