Texas received the most preseason watch list selections of any team in the Big 12 Conference
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas soccer put two student-athletes on the preseason watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, as senior forward Cyera Hintzen and junior midfielder/forward Haley Berg each made the cut for the Longhorns according to a Thursday release from the United Soccer Coaches.
The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's winners will be announced on Jan. 10, 2020, at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
The Longhorns two selections were the most of any team in the Big 12 Conference, while Texas was also one of just 14 NCAA Division I programs to boast two-or-more selections to the 61-player preseason watch list. Defending national champion Florida State led the country with four inclusions, while Penn State, UCLA, Virginia and North Carolina each received three nods. Texas, Stanford, USC, BYU, Tennessee, Memphis, Georgetown, USF and Santa Clara all managed two selections.
Hintzen, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American and the reigning Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year, is making an appearance on the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List for the second straight season. Last year, the Garland, Texas, native led the Big 12 Conference in assists (nine) and total points (29) while finishing tied for second in goals (10). She helped power the Longhorns to a 13-5-3 overall record while totaling points in 13-of-21 matches and registering two goals in a single contest during victories over No. 23 UCF and Northern Colorado. As a result of those two-score efforts, she earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors on Aug. 28 and Sept. 18, 2018. Also a first-team All-Big 12 selection, Hintzen became the first Longhorns player to ever score five goals over the first four matches of the season. She also recorded two four-match point-scoring streaks in 2018.
A two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region and All-Big 12 choice, Berg is coming off an outstanding sophomore campaign that saw her score six goals (tied for 10th in the Big 12) and dish three assists for 15 total points. The midfielder started all 21 matches and was on the pitch for 1,535 of 1,953 possible minutes as the Longhorns registered a 13-5-3 overall mark. The Celina, Texas, product managed point-scoring streaks of four and three matches during the season and totaled two points in a contest on seven separate occasions. Twice during the 2018 campaign Berg scored goals in three-of-four matches, including a stretch of Big 12 play that witnessed single goals at No. 16 West Virginia and during wins over Kansas and Kansas State.
The MAC Hermann Trophy Watch Lists are compiled by members of the United Soccer Coaches Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-America Committees. Fifteen semifinalists will be named for both the men's and women's MAC Hermann Trophy near the end of the college season (released Dec. 3) based on voting by NCAA Division I coaches, and from those candidates, three finalists (released Dec. 13) will ultimately be placed on the ballot for the coveted award.
Texas will open its 2019 campaign on Fri., Aug. 16, by hosting an exhibition match at Mike A. Myers Stadium against Air Force at 7 p.m. CT. The contest will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network. Admission will also be free to all those wishing to attend.
