Texas DE Roach had several family members visit as part of UT Football’s annual Family Day
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Football senior defensive end Malcolm Roach is enjoying every aspect of his final collegiate season, including the Longhorns' annual 'Family Day', which took place Saturday after the team's final preseason scrimmage.
Roach, a native of Baton Rouge, La., was flocked by several of his family members as he talked about what the day meant to him with the beginning of his senior season quickly approaching.
"Knowing this is my last one here makes it more special for me," Roach said. "My mom came up for the one last year and she was the only one, but this year a lot more of my family came. It's more special because I'm trying to cherish every moment of it, and I'm just happy to be here with them."
The Roach family has been a constant fixture at Texas Football events since the former Madison Prep Academy star arrived on campus in 2016. And just like the Longhorn lineman himself, Roach's family is enjoying every moment they get to spend with each other.
"This is the best thing, to be able to come and see him," Mike Roach, Malcolm's father, said. "All of us love coming out here, and we've been doing this for four years, but it flew by. Time has just flown by. We've enjoyed it all, and especially enjoyed it for him. He's been here all four years, is going to graduate on time, and we're just proud of him. I'm a coach, too, and I've been pushing my kids to graduate and to do the right things, so I'm proud to see him do all that."
Mike Roach and the rest of Malcolm's family traveled more than 400 miles to see him on Saturday. They were among a group of more than 600 family members that RSVP'd to attend Family Day, and that support was a strong motivator for Malcolm and his teammates.
"Being out there and knowing that your family is getting to watch you practice is a great feeling," Roach said. "They get to see the grind that we go through every single day, and why we're out there doing it. It's just an added motivation to see your family out there on the sidelines at practice."
Roach and the rest of the Texas Football team will get the 2019 season underway on Aug. 31 when the Longhorns face Louisiana Tech. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on Longhorn Network.
