The Longhorns won six of their eight doubles matches during a weather-shortened first day in Waco.
Waco, Texas – The Texas Men's Tennis team won six of its eight doubles matches during a weather-shortened opening day of the ITA Texas Regional Championships in Waco on Friday. The schedule was reduced to two rounds of doubles with the Longhorns competing in three compass draws.
Senior Payton Holden paired with sophomore Siem Woldeab and split their two matches in the Red draw, winning in the opening round, 8-6, over Luc Fomba and Max Kurzban of TCU, before falling by the same score to the 2 seed Matias Soto and Nick Stachowiak of Baylor. That moved them to the final of the North bracket where they'll face Kacper Dworak and Ivailo Keremedchiev of Louisiana on Sunday.
In the White draw, junior Chih Chi Huang partnered with sophomore Eshan Talluri and the duo fell in their first match to Miguel Cabrera and Angel Diaz Jalil of UT-Arlington, 8-4, but rebounded against Bo Cautaerts and Joshua Sundaram of Lamar, 8-5, after moving to the West bracket. Huang and Talluri will play Wesley Barnett and AJ Valenty of Rice in that's bracket's final on Sunday.
Texas had two teams in the Blue draw with both winning both of their matches to set up an East bracket final between 1 seed freshman Micah Braswell and sophomore Jacob Bullard, and 2 seed freshman Leighton Allen and junior Nevin Arimilli on Sunday. To get there, Braswell and Bullard defeated Connor Johnson and Francisco Vittar of Texas Tech, 8-3, and Eduard Simo and Solano Caffarena of UT-Arlington, 8-4. Allen and Arimilli grabbed a pair of 8-4 victories over Oriol Fillat Gimenez and Xandy Hammitt of Louisiana, and Dimitrios Zoidis and Franco Ribero of Texas Tech.
