It is the second time the Texas Football head coach has been a midseason candidate for the Dodd Trophy.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Football head coach Tom Herman was named to the Dodd Trophy Midseason Watch List, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl announced Thursday. It is the second time in Herman's tenure at Texas (2018) he has been named to the list.
Herman has led the Longhorns to a 5-2 record this season, including wins in each of the last three contests. That streak includes an overtime road win over then-No. 6 Oklahoma State on Halloween. It was the program's first top-10 road win since 2010, and marked the second time this season that Texas has overcome a double-digit deficit to win on the road this season. The Longhorns rallied from an 11-point deficit against the Cowboys and a 15-point hole against Texas Tech on Sept. 26.
Herman's 30 victories during his first four seasons in Austin are the fourth-most by a head coach in his first four years at UT. Only Mack Brown (38), Fred Akers (36) and Blair Cherry (32) have won more games in their first four seasons at Texas all-time. Herman's tenure at Texas has been highlighted by a 10-win campaign in 2018, as well as a 3-0 record in bowl games, which includes wins over No. 5 Georgia (2018 Sugar) and No. 11 Utah (2019 Alamo). The Longhorns have collected 40 All-Big 12 honors, including 11 players garnering first-team recognition, in his first three seasons at the helm. Herman also helped coach the 2017 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year (LB Malik Jefferson), the 2017 Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year (P Michael Dickson), a pair of Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year recipients (Poona Ford, 2017; Charles Omenihu, 2018) and the 2018 Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year (DB Caden Sterns).
A panel consisting of previous Dodd Trophy winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2020 season. The winner of the 2020 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during the week of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
