Senior Bianca Turati earns decisive point with straight-set singles win against No. 8 Shiori Fukuda.
CHICAGO, Ill. — The No. 7 University of Texas women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory against No. 12 Ohio State (4-2) in the consolation bracket of the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) National Team Indoor Championship on Sunday night at XS Tennis Village. The Longhorns improved to 6-1 on the year and concluded play at the prestigious 16-team tourney with a 2-1 mark.
Texas took an early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. Freshman Adri Nagy and sophomore Tijana Spasojevic broke a 3-3 tie by winning the final three games to post a 6-3 victory on court 3 against Danielle Wolf and Kathleen Jones.
Trailing 2-3 on court 2, junior Fernanda Labraña and sophomore Marta Perez Mur won four-consecutive games to defeat Shiori Fukuda and Irina Cantos Siemers by a score of 6-3 and clinch the point. This marked the fifth time in UT's first seven dual matches that the Longhorns have won the doubles point.
Singles action proved to be a back-and-forth affair between the two top-15 teams. No. 62 Cantos Siemers earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Spasojevic at fifth singles to even the dual-match score at 1-1.
Senior No. 2 Anna Turati continued her strong play with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over Isabelle Boulais at second singles to give the Longhorns a 2-1 lead. Perez Mur increased UT's cushion to 3-1 after her opponent at sixth singles, Mary Beth Hurley, was forced to retire. Perez Mur held a 5-3 advantage in the opening set at the time the match concluded.
Kolie Allen notched a 6-3, 6-1 win against No. 125 Labraña at fourth singles, and No. 99 Wolf added a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nagy at third singles to tie the dual-match score at 3-3.
With all eyes on court 1 singles featuring a matchup of two highly-ranked players, senior No. 42 Bianca Turati came through for the Longhorns against No. 8 Fukuda. After winning the final three games to take a 6-2 opening-set win, Turati held a 3-2 lead in the second set. She broke Fukuda and then held her own serve to build a 5-2 advantage. After Fukuda held serve to pull within 5-3, Turati again held serve to close out her victory and secure the dual-match win for Texas.
UT returns to action when it hosts Air Force on Thursday, Feb. 13. First serve is set for 3 p.m. Central at the Texas Tennis Center.
