The Details
It was TCU that managed the first two chances of the match as midfielders Yazmeen Ryan and Michelle Slater forced UT net minder Savannah Madden into action over the opening seven minutes.
After a pair of Texas shots from junior forward Cameron Brooks and junior midfielder Carlee Allen were blocked by the Horned Frogs defense at 8:56 and 9:09, TCU came dangerously close to grabbing an early lead. Forward Grace Collins got into some space up the right wing and received a pass just outside the box. She fired a shot that ventured just about a yard outside the left post.
The Frogs came close again during the 22nd minute as a cross from the right wing found Slater at the back post, but her volley attempt ventured up and over the cross bar.
After missing several scoring chances, TCU finally broke through at the 27:16 mark. Off a free kick, Texas briefly cleared the ball back outside the 18. A delivery back in towards the top of the six pinged around among players from both teams until midfielder Gracie Brian somehow managed to chip a pass forward while lying on her back. The feed somehow dropped at Ryan's feet, and the midfielder finished from seven yards out for a 1-0 lead.
Texas strung together better possession following the TCU goal as rookie midfielder Kelsey Hranicky tried her luck from distance at 33:05 by launching her first collegiate shot just over the top right corner of frame. Lengthy attempts from Grosso and McFarland also ventured well over the bar at 35:37 and 38:45, respectively.
In the final minute of the opening half, Grosso tried her luck again from 20 yards out, but drove a right-footed shot outside the right post.
Fresh out of the locker room, Texas turned up the offensive pressure. Berg launched a 20-yard shot from the top of the box, but it scraped the left outside netting.
At the 48:57 mark, Texas had a free kick in a dangerous spot about 25 yards out in the middle. Berg stepped up and blasted an effort, but it was blocked away by the TCU defensive wall.
The Longhorns came desperately close to locating an equalizer during the 55th minute as Berg received a Grosso pass up the left wing and rattled an 18-yard shot off the top of the crossbar.
Somewhat against the run of play, TCU nearly made it 2-0 in the 64th minute as the Frogs strung together a 2-v-1 break. UT goalkeeper Savannah Madden managed to cut off the angle and made a great diving save on a shot from the left wing by midfielder Haley Mallion.
Madden delivered again at 67:27 as the senior netminder dove fully extended to her left to push a 20+-yard Nicolette Lewis drive outside the right post.
Berg had a great chance to tie things up at the 71:51 mark as the senior got loose in some space inside the top of the 18. The Celina, Texas, native eventually fired on goal, but TCU keeper Emily Alvarado made her own great diving stop to bat the ball away to her left.
Eventually, the Horned Frogs managed to double their advantage at 74:06. With the ball out on the left wing, a cross into the middle of the 18 found Mallion in open space. She quickly fired a shot that beat Madden into the lower right corner to make it 2-0.
Down the stretch, while trying to climb back into the contest, Texas forced saves on shots by Nobles (77:11), senior defender Peyton McGee (77:40) and Grosso (81:51). On Grosso's chance, the Vancouver, British Columbia, product broke into space up the left wing but fired right into Alvarado's arms from 12 yards out.
TCU went on to add one more at 88:04 as forward Grace Collins blasted a drive into the upper 90 from 14 yards out to finalize a 3-0 win.
