The Longhorns earned their first AP Top 25 win of the Vic Schaefer era in Ames on Saturday.
AMES, Iowa – The Texas women's basketball team knocked off No. 24 Iowa State, 70-59, on Saturday at the Hilton Coliseum. It marked the Longhorns' first win over an AP Top 25 opponent under head coach Vic Schaefer, and pushed the team's record to 11-3 (5-2 Big 12) this season.
Charli Collier, like she has all season, was the anchor for the Longhorns in the first half, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds in the first 15 minutes of the contest. It marked her NCAA Division I-leading 10th double-double of the season and the 25th of her career to date. Collier finished the contest with 22 points and secured 19 rebounds.
With the junior as their anchor, the Longhorns went on an 8-0 run out of the first quarter media timeout to take an 18-10 lead. Texas would grow the lead to as big as 12 points in the first half before the Cyclones mounted a run of their own. Iowa State drained four-straight 3-point tries late in the second quarter to cut into the Texas lead. An ensuing 3-pointer from Shay Holle and Lauren Ebo's first bucket of the day gave UT a 34-29 edge at halftime though.
Iowa State cut Texas' lead to just one point early in the third quarter, but the Horns immediately responded by breaking out on a 14-0 run to open a 52-37 advantage. Four Longhorns scored during the run, but no one had a bigger contribution to the effort than Joanne Allen-Taylor, who tallied eight points during the offensive outburst. Allen-Taylor finished the night 6-of-8 from the floor (3-4 3FG) and scored 16 points.
Allen-Taylor and Collier were the two who continued to excel offensively for Texas in the fourth quarter. They combined to score UT's first 10 points of the final frame, helping the Longhorns hold onto a 14-point lead and salt the game away.
The Longhorns are scheduled to hit the road again in their next conference outing, as they travel to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State (9-5; 5-3 Big 12) on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
