The junior midfielder was one of 54 student-athletes to make the cut for award consideration
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas soccer junior midfielder Julia Grosso has been included on the watch list for the 2020-21 MAC Hermann Trophy according to a Thursday release from the United Soccer Coaches.
The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's award was pushed back to accommodate the seasons affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Winners will be announced May 27 at the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Press Conference and Banquet taking place at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
This marks the third straight season that Texas has had at least one player listed on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Former All-American forward Cyera Hintzen was considered during both the 2018 & 2019 seasons, while senior midfielder/forward Haley Berg made the cut in 2019.
Facing a shortened, league-only 2020 fall season, Grosso still managed to make a strong impression on the pitch for the Longhorns. The Vancouver, British Columbia, native started all nine matches in the midfield (played 797 of 810 possible minutes) and tied for the team lead in goals (two – tied for 10th in the Big 12) while dishing an assist and finishing tied for third on the squad in total points (five). During the campaign, the 2020 All-Big 12 Conference Second Team selection managed to score goals in consecutive contests for the first time in her illustrious career by tickling the twine in the 2-1 loss at No. 7 West Virginia (Oct. 2) and during the 7-0 rout of Kansas State (Oct. 9). Over the past two seasons, the Canadian international has scored 10 goals on her last 28 shots on frame, good enough for a 36% shot efficiency mark.
The MAC Hermann Trophy Watch Lists are compiled by members of the United Soccer Coaches Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-America Committees. Fifteen semifinalists will be named for both the men's and women's MAC Hermann Trophy at the end of April, based on voting by NCAA Division I coaches, and from those candidates, three finalists will ultimately be determined for the coveted award.
