The Longhorns suffered their first defeat of Big 12 play in a road tilt against West Virginia on Saturday.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 17 Texas women's basketball team dropped its first contest in Big 12 play this season on Saturday night, falling to West Virginia, 92-58, at the WVU Coliseum. The loss drops Texas to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Joanne Allen-Taylor was Texas' leading scorer, tallying 12 points to record her ninth-straight game in double figures. Allen-Taylor went 4-of-12 from the floor and added four rebounds and two assists. Celeste Taylor also got into double figures, scoring 10 points. It was her fourth game in double figures this season, and first since scoring 14 versus Louisiana Tech on Dec. 2 in Austin.
Defensively, Texas forced 19 turnovers on Saturday. Six Longhorns recorded at least one steal, with Taylor, Allen-Taylor and Ashley Chevalier all logging two. Taylor's two steals pushed her total to a team-high 24 in seven appearances this season. Entering the game, her 3.7 steals per game would've ranked No. 10 in the nation among D1 players if she met the minimum games played qualification (75% of team's games).
The Longhorns played West Virginia tight in the early goings of the game, but when All-America center/forward Charli Collier picked up her third foul in the first quarter, the Longhorns were forced to go to the bench earlier than expected. West Virginia outscored Texas, 68-40, over the final three quarters.
Texas returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 14, with a home matchup against TCU at the Frank Erwin Center. Tip-off is currently scheduled for 7 p.m. on Longhorn Network.
