Both Grosso & Abbott will be playing internationally as part of the “Canada Celebration Tour”
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas All-American senior midfielder Julia Grosso and freshman midfielder Amelia Abbott will each miss the Longhorns matches against West Virginia (Thurs., Oct. 21) and Oklahoma State (Sun., Oct. 24) while participating with their respective senior national teams on the "Canada Celebration Tour."
On the tour created specifically to celebrate Canada's recent achievement of winning the first soccer gold medal in the country's Olympic history, Grosso and the Canadian Women's Senior National Team will battle New Zealand over a two-match series in Ottawa (Sat., Oct. 23) and Montreal (Tues., Oct. 26).
After spending time previously as part of New Zealand's Under-17 and Under-20 national teams, these matches against the defending Olympic champions will also serve as Abbott's first-ever call-up as part of the Football Ferns' Senior National Team.
"Here at Texas, student-athletes often get the chance to do special things," Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. "For Julia Grosso, what she did recently in earning five Olympic caps, while also scoring the final penalty in the shootout to help Team Canada win its first gold medal, were truly the definition of special. We're so excited for her to have the opportunity to do even more special things over the next few days including spending time meeting with the Prime Minister while also being celebrated in both Ottawa and Montreal as a national hero alongside her teammates for the history they all achieved in Tokyo.
"I'd also like to say how proud we all are of Amelia Abbott on receiving her first call-up to the New Zealand Women's Senior National Team for these "Canada Celebration Tour" matches."
Grosso and Abbott are expected to be back for Texas' regular-season finale at Kansas on Thurs., Oct. 28.
