AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Football junior QB Casey Thompson has been named to the Davey O'Brien Award's Quarterback Class of 2021, the Davey O'Brien Foundation announced on Tuesday. As a member of the Class of 2021, Thompson becomes eligible to be voted one of 16 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.
Thompson, a native of Newcastle, Okla., has completed 89-of-137 passes for 1,274 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. The junior's 171.9 passing efficiency rating is eighth-best nationally, and he also ranks 11th in yards per pass attempt (9.30) and 13th in passing yards per completion (14.31). Among Big 12 competitors, he ranks first in passing efficiency, yards per attempt, yards per completion, passing touchdowns (15), points responsible for (108) and points responsible for per game (15.4).
In Texas' 70-35 victory over Texas Tech, Thompson accounted for six touchdowns (five passing, one rushing), earning a spot on the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 list for week four, as well as Maxwell Award and Manning Award Player of the Week nods and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. Only Colt McCoy (6, 2006 vs. Baylor) had more passing touchdowns and Clyde Littlefield (7, 1915 vs. Daniel Baker) more touchdowns accounted for than Thompson's five passing touchdowns and six touchdowns accounted for versus the Red Raiders. This season, Thompson joined McCoy and Sam Ehlinger as the only Longhorns to have multiple five-touchdown passing games after passing for five each against Texas Tech and Oklahoma.
For the second straight year, fan voting for the Davey O'Brien Award will take place on the organization's official @DaveyOBrien Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts. The top five vote getters on each of the three social media platforms will receive bonus committee votes which will be added to the ballots cast by the National Selection Committee.
