A member of Texas Baseball's 1962 and 1963 SWC Championship and College World Series participants, Chuck Hartenstein passed away October 2, 2021, at the age of 79.
Hartenstein, who pitched from 1962-64 under head coach Bibb Falk, compiled a career ERA of 2.86 with an 18-6 record in 226 innings pitched. He helped lead the Longhorns to third-place finishes at the College World Series in both 1962 and 1963.
The Seguin, Texas native, had a 12-year professional baseball career that included six seasons in Major League Baseball for five different teams between 1966-77. In a six-season career, Hartenstein posted a 17–19 record with a 3.63 ERA and 23 saves in 187 relief appearances, including 88 games finished and 297 total innings of work.
His most productive professional season came in 1967 for the Chicago Cubs, when he went 9–5 with a 3.08 ERA and 10 saves, all career-numbers. He also enjoyed a solid season with the 1969 Pittsburgh Pirates, going 5-4 with a 3.85 ERA and 10 saves in a career-high 95.2 innings pitched.
Following his pitching career, he served as a coach for several organizations throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He also later served as volunteer assistant on the Texas Longhorns' 1993 College World Series team.
