Four Longhorns reach double figures in scoring in exhibition contest honoring former UT star Mike Wacker.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior Tre Mitchell posted a game-high 16 points, and senior Timmy Allen added 15 points to pace No. 5/5 Texas to a 96-33 victory against Texas Lutheran in an exhibition contest on Monday night at the Frank Erwin Center. The game was a "Unite the Family" action item to honor and salute former Longhorn star Mike Wacker, the head coach at Texas Lutheran who played at Texas from 1980-85.
Mitchell converted 7-of-12 field goals in 15 minutes, while Allen hit 6-of-8 field goals and 3-of-3 free throws in 17 minutes of action. Freshman Jaylon Tyson tallied 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting in 17 minutes, and senior Courtney Ramey added 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and four assists in 22 minutes.
Senior Marcus Carr registered a team-best seven assists and posted a plus-minus total of plus-44 in 22 minutes. Senior Andrew Jones recorded a team-high five steals in 14 minutes.
Texas converted 55.6-percent (40-72) from the floor and went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line on the night. The Longhorns held TLU to 33 points on 25.0-percent field goal shooting (12-48), including a 2-of-19 showing (.105) from three-point range. Texas posted 25 assists against just four turnovers, while the Bulldogs had only one assist against 25 turnovers.
After Garrett Prince converted a put-back layup to give Texas Lutheran a 4-2 advantage at the 18:21 mark, the Longhorns used a 20-4 run over the next six minutes to take a 22-8 lead after a Mitchell hook shot with 12:27 remaining. Leading 30-15 at the 7:19 mark, Texas scored 13 consecutive points to grab a 43-15 lead following an Allen dunk in transition with 2:59 left. The Longhorns had 14 assists against just one turnover in the opening 20 minutes and built a 47-20 halftime cushion.
Texas outscored the Bulldogs by a 49-13 margin in the second half. The Longhorns connected on 20-of-33 field goals (60.6-percent) in the final 20 minutes, while limiting Texas Lutheran to a 16.0-percent mark from the floor (4-25).
Texas opens the regular season with a home contest against Houston Baptist on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center. General admission tickets are on sale for $10, which also allows entry into the Texas Women's Basketball game vs. New Orleans at 5:30 p.m. Central.
