Six Longhorns reach double figures in scoring.
AUSTIN, Texas — Senior Courtney Ramey paced six Longhorns in double-figure scoring to lead No. 5/5 Texas (1-0) to a 92-48 victory against Houston Baptist (0-1) in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns won their 20th consecutive home opener.
The crowd of 14,683 marked the fourth-largest home-opening attendance mark in the 45-year history of the Erwin Center. It also marked the largest home-opening crowd since UT drew 15,291 fans on Nov. 17, 2001 against Arizona.
Texas converted 64.0-percent (32-50) from the floor, including an impressive 59.1-percent (13-22) from three-point range, on the night. The Longhorns held the Huskies to 48 points on 32.7-percent field goal shooting (16-49).
Ramey converted 5-of-7 field goals, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, in 19 minutes. Senior Andrew Jones posted 11 points and a career-high five steals in 24 minutes, while freshman Jaylon Tyson added 11 points while hitting 5-of-5 field goals in 14 minutes. Seniors Christian Bishop (10 points) and Marcus Carr (10 points, seven assists) and junior Tre Mitchell (10 points) also reached double figures in scoring.
Houston Baptist grabbed a 7-3 advantage following a Za-Ontay Boothman layup at the 17:36 mark, but the Longhorns responded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 14-7 lead after a Carr three-pointer with 14:49 remaining. Leading 18-15 at the 10:48 mark, Texas used a 12-0 spurt over the following three minutes to build a 30-15 advantage after a Bishop free throw with 7:41 left.
UT converted 65.2-percent (15-23) from the floor, including a 7-of-12 mark (.583) from three-point range, en route to a 43-27 halftime cushion.
The Longhorns opened the second half on a 15-2 run over the first four-and-a-half minutes to increase its advantage to 58-29 following a Mitchell hook shot with 15:33 left. The margin reached 40 points (79-39) after a Bishop free throw at the 4:03 mark. Ten different Texas players saw at least 14 minutes of action during the victory.
Texas returns to the court on Saturday, Nov. 13, when it travels to face No. 1/1 Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash. Tip is set for 9:30 p.m. Central (7:30 p.m. Pacific), and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
