Longhorns make a statement in upending the defending national champs in Palo Alto
PALO ALTO, Calif. — Texas put the women's college basketball world on notice Sunday afternoon as they marched into Maples Pavilion and took down defending National Champion and No.2/3-ranked Stanford, 61-56.
The win serves as an early statement for Vic Schaefer's 2021-22 Longhorns, who will look to build upon their effort and establish themselves as a top contender for a Big 12 Conference crown.
Freshman point guard Rori Harmon paced the UT offense as she notched a season-best 21 points on a 8-of-16 performance from the field. She also lead the team with a pair of steals in the contest to go along with five rebounds.
Harmon, a Houston native, carried the load early as she scored the first eight points of the game and had 10 of UT's 25 points at the half.
Junior transfer Aliyah Matharu provided the offensive spark in the second half for the Longhorns to help put the game on ice. She scored all 17 of her points in the final 10 minutes of action shooting 5-of-7 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc.
Senior Lauren Ebo made her presence felt in the post as she came off the bench to lead the team with six rebounds on the afternoon.
UT finished the contest shooting 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the floor and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from behind the arc.
The Longhorns won the turnover battle, 20-10, and held Stanford to just a 35.4 precent (17-48) clip on their field goal attempts.
The Cardinal were led offensively by Lexie Hull who finished with 16 points. Haley Jones added 15.
Texas returns home this Wednesday (11 a.m.) as they play host to Southeast Missouri at the Frank Erwin Center before hitting the road on Sunday for a matchup at No.15/12 Tennessee.
