Andrew Jones led four Longhorns in double-figure scoring with a game-high 19 points.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard Andrew Jones registered a game-high 19 points to pace No. 13/13 Texas (13-5, 7-4 Big 12) to a 70-55 victory against TCU (11-8, 4-6 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns used a 13-1 run over a four-minute stretch midway through the second half to pull away for the important league win.
Jones had 13 of his 19 points in the opening half and converted 9-of-16 field goals in 27 minutes of action. He has reached double figures in scoring in 13 consecutive games, including all 11 league contests this season.
Senior guard Matt Coleman III posted 10 of his 15 points in the second half and knocked down 6-of-8 field goals, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, in 34 minutes. Freshman forward Greg Brown tallied 13 points while hitting 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and grabbed 6 rebounds in 30 minutes, and senior forward Jericho Sims added 11 points and 8 boards in 28 minutes.
Tied at 21-21 with 7:20 remaining in the first half, the Longhorns scored nine straight points over the next four minutes to build a 30-21 advantage after a pair of Brown free throws at the 3:23 mark. Texas converted 51.7-percent (15-29) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and took a 37-29 lead into the break.
After Coleman gave the Longhorns a 43-35 margin at the 16:52 mark, TCU went on a 6-0 spurt to pull within 43-41 following a Jaedon LeDee jumper with 14:56 left. Taryn Todd hit a pair of free throws to trim the gap to 49-46 at the 9:45 mark, but Texas responded with a 13-1 run over the next four-plus minutes to build a 62-47 cushion following a Courtney Ramey three-point play with 5:21 left. The lead did not dip into single digits the rest of the way.
The Longhorns return to action when they travel to face No. 12/12 Oklahoma on Tuesday, Feb. 16. Tip is set for 8 p.m. CT at the Lloyd Noble Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
