AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Football's Samuel Cosmi was selected by the Washington Football Team with the 51st overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft on Friday.
Cosmi is the first Longhorn offensive lineman to be taken in the NFL Draft since former teammate Connor Williams was selected in the second round by the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. In addition, Cosmi is the 15th player selected by the Washington Football Team in NFL Draft history, and the first since linebacker Keenan Robinson was picked in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Cosmi, who was entrenched as one of Texas' starting linemen since the beginning of his redshirt freshman season in 2018, appeared in all 35 possible games for the Longhorns, while starting at one of the tackle spots in each of UT's last 34 outings.
He was selected as a third-team All-American by the Associated Press and was a first-team All-Big 12 honoree in his final collegiate season. Cosmi also received honorable mention as the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year from the league's coaches.
In 2020, Cosmi started the first eight games of the season. In that time he led the team in total first down/touchdown blocks (25), total knockdown blocks (28) and total intimidation/dominant blocks (12). Entering his last appearance of the season, he had allowed only one QB hit, one tackle for loss and one sack on the year. Cosmi was part of an offensive line that helped Texas average 41.3 points per game, the fourth-best scoring average in school history. He blocked for an offense that averaged 6.36 yards per play, the seventh-best mark on UT record and helped Texas post two 60-point games (63 at Texas Tech, 69 at Kansas State). It was the first time since 2005 that Texas recorded multiple 60-point outings in a season. The Longhorns averaged 5.0 yards per carry and scored 18 rushing touchdowns this past season behind Cosmi and the offensive line. Cosmi played a part in helping senior QB Sam Ehlinger (112 yards vs. Oklahoma) and true freshman RB Bijan Robinson (113 yards vs. West Virginia) each record a 100-yard outing with him on the line
As a sophomore, Cosmi earned second-team All-Big 12 honors and was honorable mention for the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year. He earned All-Bowl recognition from the Associated Press and ESPN following his impressive performance in the Alamo Bowl against Utah's vaunted defense. The Humble, Texas native was a USA Today Freshman All-American in 2018.
