No. 2 Women’s Tennis wins at No. 49 Kansas, 6-1

The Longhorns improve to 6-0 in Big 12 Conference play.
LAWRENCE, Kan. — The No. 2 University of Texas women's tennis team registered a 6-1 win at No. 49 Kansas (7-9, 1-5 Big 12) in a Big 12 Conference match on Friday evening at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The Longhorns won their 12th consecutive dual match and improved to 19-1 on the season, including a perfect 6-0 mark in Big 12 play.
Texas claimed a 1-0 advantage by earning the doubles point for the 19th time in its first 20 dual matches. Playing together for just the second time this year, the duo of senior Marta Perez Mur and freshman Charlotte Chavatipon earned a 6-4 win on court 3 against Carmen Roxana Manu and Tiffany Lagarde. Tied at 4-4, Perez Mur and Chavatipon broke the Jayhawks duo and then held serve to close out their first win as a doubles team.
The No. 7-ranked freshman tandem of Kylie Collins and Lulu Sun clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory on court 1 over Sonia Smagina and Vasiliki Karvouni. Collins and Sun jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Smagina and Karvouni rallied to win three straight games to pull within 5-4. The Longhorns' duo held serve in the following game to close out the win and improve to 12-2 in dual-match doubles play this spring.
No. 81 Chavatipon kept the momentum going in singles with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory on court 3 against Roxana Manu. She improved to 18-1 in singles overall this season, including a 15-1 mark in dual-match play.
No. 56 Collins followed by posting a 6-3, 6-1 win on court 4 over Karvouni and moved to 11-2 in dual-match singles action. No. 72 Sun clinched the overall dual-match victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court 2 against No. 102 Malkia Ngounoue. Sun improved to 13-2 in dual-match singles action.
Playing out the remaining singles matches, senior Fernanda Labraña added a 6-2, 7-5 win on court 5 over Lagarde to move to 18-2 in singles overall this year, including an 11-1 record in dual-match play. No. 18 senior Anna Turati dropped a hard-fought 3-6, 7-6 (13-11), 1-0 (10-2) decision in a third-set super breaker to Smagina on court 1.
Freshman Malaika Rapolu was pushed to a pair of tie breakers but managed to close out Friday's action with a 7-6 (13-11), 7-6 (7-2) win on court 6 against Julia Deming. Rapolu improved to 19-2 overall in singles this season, including a 12-1 mark in dual-match play.
UT returns to action when it travels to face Kansas State in a Big 12 Conference match on Sunday, April 11. First serve is set for 11 a.m. Central at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium in Manhattan.
