The rookie midfielder is the first Texas player to score four times since Kelly McDonald on Oct. 10, 2003
AUSTIN, Texas – Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium was one for the record books as Longhorns freshman midfielder Lexi Missimo tied a school single-match record by scoring four goals over a stretch of just 15:51 of the second half to help power Texas soccer (2-3-2) to a dominant, 7-0 win over UTRGV (3-4-1).
Senior midfielder Julia Grosso, senior defender Cameron Brooks and freshman forward Trinity Byars (first collegiate goal) all got on the stat sheet with goals during the rout of the Vaqueros.
Texas Team Notes
- Missimo became the first Longhorns player to score four goals in a match in almost 18 years.
- Missimo's four goals tied a program single-match record as the Southlake, Texas, native joined former All-American Kelly McDonald (vs. Baylor – Oct. 10, 2003), Katie Baruth (vs. Auburn – Oct. 15, 2000) and Carol Finch (vs. Pittsburgh – Sept. 1, 1996) as the only UT players to ever perform the feat.
- Missimo also became the 14th Texas player to score at least three goals in a single match and the first to do so since Kristin Cummins registered a hat trick (three goals) against UW-Milwaukee back on Oct. 1, 2010.
- Freshman forward Trinity Byars scored her first collegiate goal at the 60:41 mark and assisted on two of Missimo's goals to give the Richardson, Texas, product a team-leading four assists in 2021.
- Missimo has now totaled nine goals and five assists for 23 total points over her first 10 career collegiate matches. She also leads the squad with six goals over Texas' first seven matches of 2021.
- Texas tallied its six second-half goals over a stretch of just 15:51 with Missimo scoring to both start and finish the outburst.
- The Longhorns out-shot the Vaqueros by a commanding total of 29-6, led 14-0 in shots on goal and 8-1 in corner kicks.
- In all, 25 different Texas players got on the pitch against UTRGV with senior goalkeeper Madison Hogue earning her first 19 career minutes as a second-half sub between the pipes.
- Junior forward Sydney Nobles registered her second career two-assist match. The previous occurrence came against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi back on March 26, 2021.
The Details
UTRGV managed its only two shots of the opening half early on at the 46-second and 5:14 marks as Shentatious Knox and Emily Zapata each fired wide right of goal.
From there, it was all Texas offensively over the remainder of the initial 45 minutes as Missimo had a shot blocked at 7:28, and Grosso followed in the ninth minute by driving a 25-yard free kick just over the top.
The woodwork proved unkind to the Horns at 14:31 as Byars rattled a 22-yard effort off the crossbar before UTRGV cleared its lines.
It was Grosso that finally got the Burnt Orange & White on the scoreboard with a personal piece of brilliance at 17:58. The Vancouver, British Columbia, native received a pass on the run heading into the right side of the 18-yard box. She dribbled through a pair of Vaquero defenders before tucking a nine-yard shot into the lower left corner to make it 1-0.
Just 38 seconds later, Missimo almost made it 2-0. In possession on the right wing, senior forward Mackenzie McFarland delivered a perfectly weighted cross towards the back post. Missimo leapt in the air and tried a running volley from six yards out only to drive her shot just outside the woodwork.
With the Longhorns swarming the offensive end, Nobles was robbed of a goal by the woodwork at 37:04 as her shot from the top of the box bounced off the right post.
Out of the halftime break, it didn't take long for Texas to explode for six goals over a stretch of 15:51.
UT freshman forward Holly Ward got things started in the 56th minute by driving hard up the right wing before crossing a ball into the middle. Byars received the pass and blasted a shot off the left post. The rebound ricocheted out to Missimo inside the 18. She dribbled to her left and scored into the lower left right corner for a 2-0 advantage.
Byars scored her first collegiate goal at 60:41 to grant the Longhorns a 3-0 lead. In possession on the right wing, Byars drove to her left into the middle of the 18 before firing a left-footed shot off the inside of the left post and into the twine.
Missimo soon got back to work by scoring twice over a 50-second span of the 64th and 65th minutes to make it 5-0. After finding the net off a Byars pass from 16 yards out at 63:52, Missimo made it a hat trick at 64:42. Byars started off that play by battling her way off the ground while still maintaining possession in the left edge of the 18. She fed a ball into the middle of the box that Missimo drove home right-footed from 12 yards out.
At 70:10, Nobles earned an assist as her cross from the right wing to the top of the six-yard box was headed into the lower left corner by Brooks to make it 6-0.
Freshman midfielder Ashlyn Miller started off UT's final scoring play by delivering a through ball up the right wing. Byars secured possession and drove a shot on frame from 15 yards out. UTRGV goalkeeper Maile Lunardi managed to parry the ball out to her right, but it traveled right to Missimo who finished easily into an open net from eight yards out at 71:25 to finalize the 7-0 scoreline.
