Joanne Allen-Taylor records game-high 19 points as Longhorns suffer second-straight Big 12 defeat.
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 13/12 Texas women's basketball team suffered its second-straight Big 12 Conference defeat Wednesday evening falling to Kansas, 70-66 in overtime at the Frank Erwin Center.
With the loss, the Longhorns slip to 11-3 overall on the season with a 1-2 mark in league play. Kansas moves to 11-2, 2-1.
UT battled throughout but ultimately, couldn't generate enough offense to offset a season-high 23 turnovers. Kansas capitalized for 18 points off of Texas' turnovers in the game.
The Longhorns trailed the Jayhawks by as many as eight points, 34-26, at the 8:38 mark of the third quarter but used a 17- 8 run to take the lead, 43-42, heading into the fourth quarter.
With both teams trading blows throughout the final frame, Aliyah Matharu knocked down a clutch three-pointer with 1:07 left to tie it, 59-59, and push the game to overtime.
Kansas jumped in front with a three-pointer by Zakiyah Franklin to open the overtime period and never relinquished the lead to claim the upset over the Longhorns.
Texas finished the game shooting 41 percent (25-of-61) from the field and 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from behind the arc. Kansas shot 49 percent (25-of-51) from the floor and 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from three-point range.
Texas outrebounded Kansas, 38-32. Turnovers were even as both teams committed 32, respectively.
Senior guard Joanne Allen-Taylor paced the Horns offensively registering a team-high 19 points. DeYona Gaston posted 14 points while Rori Harmon dished out a team-best seven assists and nine rebounds.
Kansas was led offensively by Holly Kersgieter who finished with 19 points. Aniya Thomas added 11 while Jackson was their leading rebounder with eight boards.
Texas is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Jan.15, as they welcome in West Virginia for a Big 12 clash inside the Frank Erwin Center. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. CT and will air nationally on Longhorn Network.
