Aliyah Matharu records game-high 26 points as the Longhorns grab a Big 12 victory at home
AUSTIN, Texas — After dropping two-straight Big 12 Conference games, the No. 13/12 Texas women's basketball team put an emphatic end to that skid Saturday evening as it took down West Virginia, 73-57, inside the Frank Erwin Center.
With the win, the Longhorns run their record to 12-3 overall on the season with a 2-2 mark in league play. WVU drops to 8-6, 1-3.
Junior guard Aliyah Matharu erupted for 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting to lead the way offensively. The D.C. native also converted 8-of-11 tries at the free throw line and knocked down a pair of triples in the win.
Senior Audrey Warren finished with 17 points on as 5-of-6 performance from the floor and went a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe.
Rori Harmon (11) and Lauren Ebo (10) were the other Longhorns to finish in double figures offensively and they each brought down nine rebounds to lead the team on the glass. Harmon also led the team with five steals and three assists in the win.
As a team, Texas shot a season-high 78.8 percent from the free throw line in the game converting 26-of-33 attempts and held West Virginia to just a 4-of-7 mark at the line.
After committing a season-high 23 turnovers in Wednesday's overtime loss to Kansas, the Longhorns trimmed that number nearly in half Saturday as they finished with 13. The Mountaineers committed 20 turnovers.
Texas finished the game shooting 44 percent (22-of-50) from the floor. West Virginia shot 47.2 (25-of-53).
The Mountaineers were led offensively by KK Deans and Ja'Naiya Quinerly who finished with 19 points, respectively. Esmery Martinez led the team on the glass with five rebounds.
Texas is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19, as they travel to Ames for a matchup with first place and No.9/9-ranked Iowa State . Tip is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT and will air nationally on ESPN+.
