Program celebrates Longhorns student-athletes' charitable initiatives in their communities
AUSTIN, Texas – University of Texas Athletics, together with Truist, the Official Bank Sponsor of Texas Athletics, have launched Hook 'Em's Community Heroes to celebrate student-athletes' off-the-field efforts in their communities.
Throughout the school year, Hook 'Em's Community Heroes consists of two platforms to recognize and provide benefits to causes with which student-athletes are engaged:
- During their respective seasons, team achievements of Longhorns Soccer, Volleyball, Women's Basketball, and Softball are generating a cumulative charitable contribution to support the Developing Neighborhood Athletes Fund (DNA Fund). Introduced in December 2020 by the Texas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the DNA Fund benefits young athletes in the greater Austin community whose financial circumstances may be prohibiting them from participating in their sport and achieving their athletic dreams. Truist is donating to the DNA Fund based on each sports' accomplishments as follows:
- Soccer: $100 for each goal scored
- Volleyball: $25 for each ace served
- Women's Basketball: $33 for each made 3-pointer
- Softball: $100 for each home run
As of today, soccer and volleyball already have generated $6,575 for the DNA Fund, courtesy of Truist.
- Each month of the school year, two student-athletes will be honored for their time and energy they donate to causes in their communities. In recognition thereof, Truist will donate $500 to each cause. The first two student-athletes will be announced later this month.
The Hook 'Em's Community Heroes team achievement donation tracker and an archive of each month's individual honorees are featured at www.TexasSports.com/TruistCares.
"Supporting the Hook 'Em's Community Heroes program perfectly aligns with our purpose to inspire and build better lives and communities," said Joe Smith, head of sponsorships, experiential, and local marketing at Truist. "We're proud to support Longhorns student-athletes through their hard work on the field and the causes they're passionate about off the field. We look forward to seeing the impact this program will have on the community."
