AUSTIN, Texas — Freshman Arterio Morris posted a game-high 19 points to pace No. 12/12 Texas to a 90-60 victory against No. 10/10 Arkansas in a charity exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at Moody Center. All proceeds from the contest will be donated to a pair of organizations supporting social justice equity and educational opportunities to youth in Central Texas communities, Seedling Foundation and Break the Pipeline.
Morris converted 6-of-9 field goals, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, and added three assists and two rebounds in 20 minutes. Morris was one of five Longhorns to reach double digits in scoring in the exhibition contest.
Senior Timmy Allen registered 12 points (5-10 FG) and five assists in 20 minutes, and graduate Sir'Jabari Rice tallied 11 points while hitting 4-of-6 field goals and 3-of-3 free throws in 25 minutes. Sophomore Tyrese Hunter recorded 10 points, converting 2-of-5 from three-point range, to go along with three rebounds and two assists in 25 minutes, while freshman Dillon Mitchell added 10 points (5-6 FG), five rebounds (four offensive) and two blocks in 16 minutes.
The Longhorns converted 55-percent (33-60) from the floor, including a 10-of-17 (.588) mark from three-point range, on the afternoon. Texas registered 21 assists on 33 made field goals against 13 turnovers. Defensively, the Longhorns limited the Razorbacks to 60 points on 40-percent field goal shooting (20-50) and allowed just 10 assists while forcing 23 turnovers. UT posted a 26-12 advantage in points off turnovers and a 45-29 margin in bench scoring.
Graduate Marcus Carr knocked down a three-pointer on UT's first possession and Mitchell followed with a dunk to give the Longhorns a 5-0 advantage at the 18:11 mark, and Texas never surrendered the lead. Texas built a 22-16 cushion following an Allen put-back with 8:30 remaining, before the Razorbacks used a 5-0 spurt to climb to within a single point (22-21) after a Nick Smith Jr. three-point play at the 7:39 mark.
Leading 29-27 with 4:04 left in the opening half, the Longhorns closed the period on a 11-3 run capped by an Allen layup with seven seconds remaining to take a 40-30 advantage into the break. Texas converted 5-of-10 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes, while Arkansas went just 1-of-5 from beyond the arc.
UT opened the second half with a 7-0 spurt to build a 47-30 cushion following an Allen three-point play with 18:00 left. After a Smith Jr. layup closed the gap to 49-35 at the 16:03 mark, the Longhorns responded with a 20-0 run to grab a commanding 69-35 advantage following a Dylan Disu steal and dunk with 12:06 remaining. The Razorbacks were unable to get closer than 23 points for the remainder of the contest. UT hit 17-of-25 field goals (.680) in the final 20 minutes, including a 5-of-7 mark from three-point range.
Texas opens the regular season with a home contest against UTEP on Monday, Nov. 7. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at Moody Center, and the game will be televised by Longhorn Network.
