Mitchell and Allen both record double-doubles to lead the Longhorns.
AUSTIN, Texas — Freshman Dillon Mitchell and senior Timmy Allen each recorded a double-double to pace No. 12/12 Texas (2-0) to an 82-31 win over Houston Christian (0-2) on Thursday evening before a sellout crowd at Moody Center. The 31 points allowed is tied for the second-fewest points allowed by the Longhorns in program history. Texas previously held Texas State to 27 points on Dec. 13, 2014.
Mitchell tallied 10 points (5-5 FG) and a game-high 12 rebounds (eight offensive) along with a blocked shot in 17 minutes, while Allen registered 10 points and 10 boards (five offensive) in 17 minutes. Mitchell and Allen were two of five Longhorns who reached double figures in scoring on the night. Graduate Marcus Carr posted 11 points (5-9 FG) and tied his career high with four steals in 22 minutes. Graduate Sir'Jabari Rice recorded 11 points (3-5 FG, 4-5 FT), three assists, two boards and a steal in 17 minutes, and freshman Arterio Morris added 10 points (5-11 FG), five rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes.
This marked the second time in the Chris Beard era that the Longhorns have held an opponent to 31 points. Texas limited Arkansas-Pine Bluff to 31 points on Dec. 14, 2021. UT also held the Huskies to 21.7-percent field goal shooting (13-60) on the night. This marked the fourth-lowest field goal percentage allowed by Texas since the 1960-61 season and lowest since Texas State converted 21.6-percent (11-51) on Dec. 13, 2014.
The Longhorns posted a 52-14 advantage in points in the paint, a 32-4 margin in points off turnovers and a 27-0 edge in fast-break points. Through its first two contests, Texas has recorded a 43-1 advantage in fast-break points. UT also registered a +23 (56-33) rebound margin. The Longhorns converted 51.5-percent from the floor (35-68) for the game. Texas has topped the 50-percent mark from the field in each of its first two games, as it hit 54.8-percent in the season opener against UTEP.
Texas controlled the contest from the opening tip, scoring the first 16 points of the game. Houston Christian did not get on the board until an Andrew King layup cut the deficit to 16-2 at the 13:17 mark.
After a Chigozie Achara layup trimmed the margin to 18-4 with 10:36 left, the Longhorns responded with a 6-0 spurt to build a 24-4 advantage following a Mitchell dunk at the 9:18 mark. HCU pulled to within 32-12 after a Bonke Maring layup with 2:42 remaining, before Texas closed the half on a 7-0 run to take a 39-12 cushion into the break.
The Longhorns held the Huskies to 20.0-percent field goal shooting (5-25), including a 2-of-11 mark (.182) from three-point range, and forced 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Texas registered a 30-6 edge in points in the paint, a 29-12 margin in rebounds (15-5 on the offensive glass), a 19-2 advantage in points off turnovers and a 13-0 margin in fast break points in the first half.
HCU's Jason Thompson converted a free throw with 14:27 left to pull the Huskies to within 49-19. The Longhorns responded with a 19-0 spurt over the next six-plus minutes to build a 49-point advantage (68-19) following a pair of Allen free throws at the 7:41 mark. The Longhorns led by as much as 59 points (82-23) after a Gavin Perryman three-pointer with 2:50 remaining.
Texas returns to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 16, when it hosts No. 2/2 Gonzaga. Tip is set for 8:30 p.m. Central, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
