No. 3/3 Women’s Basketball wins season opener over Louisiana, 68-45

Taylor Jones leads Longhorns with game-high 21 points and six rebounds.
AUSTIN, Texas — Taylor Jones scored 21 points and No. 3/3 Texas (1-0) held Louisiana (1-1) to 25 percent shooting from the field in a 68-45 victory on Friday at Moody Center.
Also scoring in double-figures for the Longhorns, freshman Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda and junior Shay Holle scored 10 points apiece. Holle added a career-high five steals.
Texas forced Louisiana into 28 turnovers and converted 26 points off those turnovers.
In the fourth quarter Louisiana narrowed the Texas lead to 10 at 52-42 with 5:57 to play. Texas responded by scoring 13 of the final 16 points of the game.
Game Notes
• Shaylee Gonzales and Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda combined to go 14-of-14 from the free-throw line. The Longhorns made 29 free-throws compared to Louisiana attempting 30 free-throws.
• Taylor Jones converted 9-of-14 from the field for a 66 percent field goal percentage.
• With the defensive effort tonight, in the past five seasons Texas has held an opponent to 45 points or fewer nine times, six of which have come under head coach Vic Schaefer.
• The Longhorns got excellent bench production with 33 points from their reserve players and outscored Louisiana 33-5 in bench points.
• After allowing nine offensive rebounds to Louisiana in the first half, Texas limited to Louisiana to three offensive rebounds the remainder of the game.
Up next the Longhorns travel to Storrs, Conn., to take on No. 6 Connecticut on Monday, Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on FS1.
