The Matchup
Texas (8-4; 6-3 Big 12) won three of its last four games, including a 38-27 home win in Austin in the Longhorns' regular-season finale on Nov. 25. That stretch began with a road win at then-No. 13 and eventual Big 12 champion Kansas State. The Huskies are riding a six-game winning streak including an Apple Cup victory at Washington State to close out the regular season.
The 2022 Alamo Bowl marks the 58th all-time bowl appearance for the Longhorns, the third-most in the country behind only Alabama and Georgia, and the 40th for the Huskies.
Texas and Washington have played four times, with the Longhorns owning a 3-1 all-time record. The programs last met in 2001 at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, where the Longhorns overcame a 19-point deficit to come away with a 47-43 victory.
Steve Sarkisian has led his programs to six bowl games in his nine seasons as a head coach. He led Washington to four-straight bowl games following the 2010-13 seasons and guided USC to the Holiday Bowl in 2014. Sarkisian is 2-2 as a head coach in bowl games. His Washington team played in the 2013 Fight Hunger Bowl, a game he did not coach in after taking over the Trojans' program. Sarkisian was the head coach for the Huskies' Alamo Bowl appearance against Baylor in 2011.
Sarkisian's 2022 Longhorns feature a balanced attack that is averaging 35.7 points per game (20th NCAA) and allowing just 21.2 points per game (30th NCAA).
